Here at Black Magic German Shepherds we breed for temperament and health first. We strive to produce the classic German Shepherd: naturally protective of his family, faithful, athletic, and beautiful. Our dogs are oversize and have level backs like the old fashioned German Shepherds with big bones, massive heads and tall, strong bodies.

Breeding Principles

Black Magic German Shepherds are bred and raised to be family dogs. They are intelligent, like to work, and can easily be trained in obedience, agility, and search and rescue.
However, we breed dogs with low drive which are not suitable for schutzhund or attack work. Experience has taught us that a dog that has a strong working drive does not make a good family dog for the most part. They are bred to work, and if they are not kept busy will make work for themselves doing things like excavating your back yard or sofa.
Instead, Black Magic German Shepherds are bred to be very intelligent and willing to please so they are quick to learn obedience and fun jobs like agility. They will still protect you and your family - instinctively, as every good shepherd should. But they are not bred for the high drive required for advanced protection and bite work. The biggest benefit of this is that you will have a dog that loves to play with you and take care of you, but is quiet and calm in their nature, never hyper or nervous.

Care and Socialization

Our puppies are cherished from the moment they are conceived. All breedings are carefully planned, and the adult dogs are kept in excellent condition both mentally and physically. The resulting puppies are of the highest quality.
When we have a litter the puppies are handled constantly from the moment they are born. Every day of its life each puppy gets held and cuddled and loved. They grow up totally trusting. They get regular vet care and are well immunized and healthy when they leave to go to their new homes.

Color and Type

We breed the old-fashioned German shepherd that most Americans know and love. They are tall and substantial with good bone. We breed for a level topline, not the slanted look that is popular in the show ring.
Black Magic German Shepherds are considered oversize by the German Shepherd show standard. Our males usually weigh between 100-130 pounds. The females range from 90-100 pounds.
Black Magic German Shepherds started out with primarily black shepherds. However, over the years we have come to love every color - it's the dog inside that matters! We now offer puppies and grown dogs in all colors: Solid black, black and tan, black and red, sable, bi-color or bi-black, white and blue. (no livers yet!)
Coats are primarily short with the traditional shepherd undercoat. Occasionally we have a plush coat puppy available. We do not breed long coats and altho some of our puppies are very fluffy, they will shed out fairly short.

Health

For over 30 years we have worked to breed the very best dog possible. The pup you buy from us has been carefully planned for many preceeding generations. Many of our clients have returned to buy a second dog from us when their first one died of old age at 12-14.
It is absolutely impossible to breed a large number of German Shepherds and have absolutely no genetic problems. However, we have had less than 1 percent of Black Magic German Shepherds experience any health problems. That is a pretty good record, one which we are proud of. We have never had a single dog with a temperament problem. Our adult dogs are available for you to see and touch at any time, by appointment.

All pups are out of AKC and/or CKC registered parents with excellent hips and elbows. We provide their early health care such as shots and worming. They are very well socialized and snuggled from the moment they are born. Most of the pups born here are at least 3d generation Black Magic German Shepherds, and many go back 6 generations with the last great-great-grandmother still alive and healthy.

Pups older than 12 weeks are priced individually but usually start at $2000

By the age of 12 weeks we have spent roughly 250 hours with our pups (not including the week before whelping that wendy sleeps in the kennel room!).
We teach them appropriate behaviour, such as not biting and not jumping on us and not barking excessively. Each pup is cuddled and played with away from his littermates every day so each one can have a one-on-one relationship with humans.
Their housetraining is aided by our kennel environment where we separate sleeping and playing areas, and by keeping the indoor sleeping area spotlessly clean. The pups learn to keep their sleeping areas clean at an early age.

We also furnish lots of toys which aids later training in obedience and search and rescue.

Adult dogs are priced individually.
